Students Celebrate Tuition All Gone Day

Written by Nina Pongratz '13

With the smell of popcorn in the air and today’s top 40 playing in the background, students wandered in and out of the Tuition All Gone (TAG) Day Carnival event on April 11. TAG Day marks the day when tuition dollars run out and the rest of the academic year is covered by gifts to The Muhlenberg Fund. This year, contributions from alumni, parents and friends of the College cover a 15% gap between tuition paid and the College’s operating costs.

Greeted at the door by the Mule, each student was given a raffle ticket for the chance to win Muhlenberg prizes. TAG Day activities included playing carnival games, signing thank-you cards to donors and collecting senior class gifts. Each was a way for the campus community to express their gratitude for those who support Muhlenberg College.

This year the Senior Class Connections Campaign (SCCC) is asking each member of the Class of 2013 to give a gift of $20.13 to The Muhlenberg Fund. To date, 38.4% of the senior class has already made a gift. Chairman of the Board Richard F. Brueckner ’71, P’04, P’10 will add his own personal contribution of $3,000 since more than 30% of the class made a gift. If more than 40% of seniors make a gift, he’ll contribute $4,000. If seniors reach 50%, they will be invited to a barbecue hosted by President Helm during Senior Week. The SCCC is eager to break this 50% participation goal.

Without these donors, the Muhlenberg experience would not be the same. TAG Day signifies all the support that the campus community receives from The Muhlenberg Fund. The College’s unrestricted annual fund contributes to the beautification of campus, Wifi, free on campus printing, departmental advancements and much more!

“When students make a gift, it’s very meaningful to those of us who work at the College,” says Kim Anderson, Director of The Muhlenberg Fund. “We’re especially grateful to the Class of 2013 – no other class has ever beaten the Break the Brueck Challenge so early. Their support continues the tradition of philanthropy at Muhlenberg and will directly impact current students and faculty. I can’t think of a better legacy to leave as they prepare to graduate.”
